Drum Circle

Poem by Gypsychant
I dedicate this to the South West Florida Drum Circle

Drum Circle: A group of people; young, old, girls, boys, gay, straight, Republican, Democrat, white, black, yellow, red, religious, atheist, that gather at said time to join together in rhythm and possible harmony.

They may gather in someones home or yard, at the beach or river, in a state park or a local park, under the moon or on the new

moon. Those are all just details. Details that really only matter to this one or that one but not to the whole. The whole process takes effect with the beat.

One beat starts and one beat ends. This is it. It is a drum circle.

Two words and only one matters.

Drum circle.

There are egos that must have a circle, must have a particular formation, must have the drums here and the shakers there, must have a small fire, must have a large fire, must have water and chairs, must have patterns and silence.

How do I know? I have been that ego, I have watched that ego, I have listened to that ego, I have known that ego, I have cursed that ego.

“Louder, you must beat your drum louder.” “Rest your hands when the rhythm stops”, “don’t occupy every second with your beat”, “learn that sometimes less is more”, “slap the drum harder”, “close your fingers”, “this is how I was taught”, “can we play a bit faster”, “can we play a bit softer”, “I want to hear the guitar”, “I want to hear the flute”, “this is no place for a guitar”, “spread the circle wider so I can dance”, “spread the circle closer so I can hear the other drummers”, “follow me”, “listen to me”, “drum this beat”, “why are you turning your back to me”. “I have been drumming my whole life”, “this is the first time I have ever drummed”. “I like the east Africa beat”, “I like the west African beat”, “I like the latin rhythm.”

“ ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” “ “ “ “ “ “ “ So much chatter, so much seems to matter…

Beat,   Beat       Beat, Beat, Slap, Bass, Tone, Slap, Slap, Tone.

Beat,   Beat       Beat, Beat, Slap, Bass, Tone, Slap, Slap, Tone.

It seeps into our soul.

Beat,   Beat       Beat, Beat, Slap, Bass, Tone, Slap, Slap, Tone.

This is why I must go.

Beat,   Beat       Beat, Beat, Slap, Bass, Tone, Slap, Slap, Tone.

I am just one.We become one.

One vibration, together in one Beat.

One Beat

One Word

Drum
